You probably are familiar with the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are just as bad since they are certainly inquisitive and have a habit of going places and getting into circumstances that they shouldn't. When my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she succeeded in finding a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and decided to play there for awhile. When she came back to the house the burrs had managed to work themselves firmly into spots on her face, her ears and her little behind.

They were matted so seriously and close to the skin that cutting them out was not possible.
A tranquilizer of any kind would have been ideal but I didn't have anything at all for her. And since there was no blood or critical injury, showing up at the emergency hospital was an option ... that time.
That is a saddening yet entertaining story to describe and hopefully an experience she has put behind her over time. It was also a trivial thing although very painful and aggravating for both of us. But it might have been a whole lot worse.
As a conscientious dog owner you would be smart to know at least basic first aid for dogs to allow you to be prepared for more life-threatening emergencies. You will often be able to save on Vet expenses for smaller problems like the one I had. But you may well need to be able to help minimize your pet's pain or engage in life-saving actions until you can see the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is undeniably a smart move but you also need to know what to do in a true emergency. Be sure to keep phone numbers close by for both your regular Vet as well as the closest animal emergency facility. And be sure to learn basic canine first aid on your own.
